First series from Quebec selected for Berlinale Series programme

Available on ICI TOU.TV EXTRA in March 2020

PRODUCTIONS CASABLANCA and RADIO-CANADA are pleased to announce that HAPPILY MARRIED (C’EST COMME ÇA QUE JE T’AIME) will have its world premiere at the 70th Berlinale. This new series written by François Létourneau, directed by Jean-François Rivard, and produced by Joanne Forgues and Catherine Faucher, has been selected for the Berlinale Series programme, amongst many other new series from across the globe. From February 24 to 26, 2020, Berlinale Series will be offering a sneak peek at a few of these series that stand out for their creativity and their originality.

Happily Married (C’est comme ça que je t’aime) will be available in Canada on ICI TOU.TV EXTRA, Radio-Canada’s digital platform, in March 2020, while Cineflix Rights will be handling its global distribution, under the title Happily Married.

This 10-episode series filmed in the summer of 2019 stars François Létourneau, Patrice Robitaille, Karine Gonthier-Hyndman, Marilyn Castonguay, Sophie Desmarais, and Rémi-Pierre Paquin, among others.

The series revolves around two couples in crisis, let down by love, friendships, and family. After dropping their children off at camp in July 1974, both couples are confronted by the lamentable state of their married lives. But in a society where divorce is still frowned upon, their search for marital bliss leads them to take a series of drastic decisions and ultimately, they become the most infamous quartet of criminals in Quebec history. The drama explores what motivates a group of unremarkable middle-class suburbanites to descend into a ruthless life of murder and criminality.

Happily Married (C’est comme ça que je t’aime) is funny, entertaining, highly emotional, and chock-full of twists and turns. The series is set in Quebec in the 1970s, those extremely turbulent times when feminism, unionism, and national affirmation were on the upsurge. Despite their flaws, the Delisles and the Paquettes are nice people, endearing even. We want to see them succeed in their descent into the underworld and, like them, we hope that one day they will find marital bliss…

“Being selected for this programme means recognition for the incredible talent of the creators of Happily Married (C’est comme ça que je t’aime). We’re very happy to be on the very short list of series selected for Berlinale Series, and to be the first series from Quebec to be part of this programme,” said producer Joanne Forgues, who has already produced Les Invincibles and Série noire for the Létourneau-Rivard duo.

“This selection means extraordinary visibility for our creators and our culture, which is totally in line with the objectives of our Your Stories, Taken to Heart strategic plan, which aims to increase Canada’s presence on the international scene,” added Dany Meloul, General Manager – Television, Radio-Canada.

Julien Leroux, SVP, Global Scripted Co-Productions, Cineflix Media said: “We’re honoured that Happily Married (C’est comme ça que je t’aime) has been selected for Berlinale Series 2020. We can’t wait to launch this brilliant dark comedy onto the international market in Berlin.”
