MEDIA RELEASE: Cineflix Productions closes development deal with award-winning filmmaker Nancy Buirski, following partnership on feature documentary

September 06, 2022

After partnering on the feature documentary Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy, Cineflix Productions has signed a development deal with multi-award-winning filmmaker Nancy Buirski (The Loving Story, The Rape of Recy Taylor).

Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy celebrates the enduring 1960s screen masterpiece; the people who created it; and its role as an inflection point in both cinema and society. The documentary film is already garnering acclaim at prestigious festivals globally; it recently premiered at the Venice International Film Festival followed by a screening at Telluride Film Festival and is highlighted as an early entry at the Hamptons International Film Festival in October. Directed and produced by Buirski, the film is also produced by Simon Kilmurry and Susan Margolin in association with Cineflix Productions, which has President and Head of Content J.C. Mills and Cineflix Media’s Co-Founder and CEO Glen Salzman serving as Executive Producers.

Building on the success of this collaboration, Cineflix Productions will finance the development of original content and provide production support for Buirski’s future projects. The deal was negotiated on behalf of Cineflix by J.C. Mills and Augusta Films by Susan Margolin, Buirski’s longtime producing partner.

“J.C.’s understanding of my vision and his enthusiastic support for Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy has been truly important to our process,” said Nancy Buirski. “I’m thrilled that he and everyone at Cineflix will continue our future journey with the Augusta Films team.”

“At the end of our first conversation together, I knew that I wanted to work with Nancy on whatever she was doing next, and Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy became that project,” said J.C. Mills, President and Head of Content, Cineflix Productions. “Her passion for filmmaking is clear in this beautifully crafted story that seamlessly weaves multiple storylines. We can’t wait to help her get even more projects off the ground.”

A member of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Buirski is an acclaimed writer, director, and producer, whose recent award-winning titles include A Crime on the Bayou, The Loving Story, Afternoon of a Faun: Tanaquil Le Clercq, By Sidney Lumet, and The Rape of Recy Taylor. Buirski founded and ran the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival from 1997 to 2008, and prior to her work in film, she was the Foreign Picture Editor at The New York Times.

Cineflix continues to amplify its slate of feature-length documentaries, which already includes Summer Qamp, a touching profile of Camp fYrefly, an arts-based retreat for LGBTQIA2S+ youth in the Canadian Rockies, and the multi-award-winning Dear Audrey, which follows filmmaker Martin Duckworth as he cares for his wife, Audrey Schirmer, through the final stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
