Cineflix Rights sells An Ordinary Woman to Australia and New Zealand

April 08, 2019

Cineflix Rights, the UK’s largest independent TV content distributor, has sold its breakout Russian drama series, An Ordinary Woman, to SBS Australia and TVNZ.

An Ordinary Woman (9×60’, 1-2-3 Production and Look Film for TV3 Russia) is the story of 39-year-old Marina—an ordinary woman, living an ordinary life in Moscow. She runs her own flower shop, her husband is a surgeon, her younger daughter is in private school, and her older daughter is at university. Her life seems perfect, but behind the façade of this ordinary family lurk some dark secrets. Marina herself is not actually a florist. Instead she earns her money from running a clandestine Whatsapp network of prostitutes. Marina’s real source of income is a mystery to her family, and in turn, they all withhold secrets from her: her husband has a mistress, her older daughter skips lectures to deal drugs, and her youngest is a sociopath. An Ordinary Woman is the riveting story of how Marina copes as her carefully constructed house of cards begins to collapse when one of her ‘girls’ is found dead in a hotel room.

An Ordinary Woman is the first Russian drama to be shortlisted for the prestigious Séries Mania festival.  Its star, Anna Mikhalkova, won the coveted best actress award, for a performance which judges called a “sensitive and nuanced performance of a strong woman who constantly has to repress her most private feelings to survive in a corrupted society.” The series also won Best TV Mini-Series and Best TV/Film Actress for Anna Mikhalkova at Russia’s 2019 National Film and Television Producers Association Awards.

Julien Leroux, SVP, Global Scripted Co-productions, Cineflix Media said: “An Ordinary Woman combines an exceptional, award-winning cast of characters with a taut, multi-layered plot which is perfect for binge-viewing or linear transmission. We’re delighted to be partnering with SBS Australia and TVNZ to bring this unique series to their audiences and look forward to announcing further sales following MIPTV.”

Bridget Ryan, Acquisitions Manager, Scripted, SBS said: “SBS continues to deliver the best dramas from around the world to Australian audiences with the enthralling new series An Ordinary Woman. With a captivating central performance from Anna Mikhalkova, we’re delighted that An Ordinary Woman is the first Russian drama series to be acquired for SBS On Demand”.

Juliet Peterson, GM of Digital Content, TVNZ added: “We’re really excited to be premiere An Ordinary Woman on TVNZ OnDemand in May and we know our viewers are going to love following Marina’s wild ride as the stakes get higher and higher.”

The deals were closed by Chris Bluett, VP, Sales, Asia Pacific and Benelux, Cineflix Rights.
